Approximately 50 cars have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.

Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they stated in a statement.

Officers state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a individual noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored substance.

The substance had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they added.

Police then found many other marked vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.

Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public display of Nazi symbols.

Law enforcement state preliminary tests suggest the substance was likely human blood.

"At present there remains no lead as to its source; authorities are not yet informed of any physical harm in connection with the incident," they commented.

Local authorities said they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the residents for information.

A high-ranking representative said the vandalism made him without words and had to be resolved rapidly.

"This act hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he stated on a platform, mentioning the murder of nine victims by a gunman focusing on residents of migrant background in five years prior.
